Teen Silversmithing — Ages 13–17

7-Week Course | Wednesdays, 4:00–6:00 pm

A hands-on introduction to silversmithing for ages 13–17.

Over seven weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of working with metal while creating several finished jewellery pieces of their own. We’ll start with guided projects and gradually build toward an independent final piece.

No previous jewellery-making or silversmithing experience is needed.

What students will learn

Students will work with copper and sterling silver while learning:

• Sawing and shaping metal

• Filing and sanding

• Hammering and texturing

• Ring sizing and forming

• Soldering

• Bezel setting a cabochon stone

• Finishing and polishing

  
  

Projects

Week 1

Introduction to studio tools and safety, copper sawing and texturing, and beginning a set of stacking rings.

Week 2

Finish two sterling silver stacking rings and begin a wide silver ring.

Week 3

Complete and finish the wide silver ring.

Weeks 4 & 5

Create a cabochon-set jewellery piece and learn how to make and finish a simple bezel setting.

Weeks 6 & 7

Design and complete an independent project. Students can choose from project examples provided in class or propose another design for approval.

One make up class for a class missed/ extra class for those needing more time will be added. The date is TBD.
